Open Letter to First Parish Community

Dear First Parish Plymouth Community,

Worship News

There is major construction that will begin in mid-September in the Meetinghouse to put in new electrical service, install an elevator, and re-do the back handicapped entrance. That back entrance will be unusable for several months. Without a second exit or means of egress, we will be unable to use the Meetinghouse during this time. We will hold our annual “Water Communion” service on Sept 11 in the Meetinghouse. Beginning the following week, Sept 18, we will return to the chapel for several months. We will also return to our regular service time, 10 am, beginning on Sept 11.

We are hoping to film the services once again and make them available on YouTube, Facebook and local public access TV. We are looking for additional volunteers to do the filming and posting of the services. Our goal is to have enough volunteers so that each person will have to film no more than once a month. Worship Services at First Parish in Plymouth

In Unitarian Universalism we draw upon six traditions for our understanding of our world and our worship services reflect this diversity:

1) Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

2) Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion and the transforming power of love;

3) Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;

4) Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

5) Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;

6) Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

During our services you will find us singing, possibly talking to one another in a “Café Conversation,” or listening to a sermon by a guest minister, a member of our congregation – perhaps a guest speaker.

From September through June we gather in our Meeting House at the top of Town Square in Plymouth. This site is the oldest continuous site of worship in the Northeast. Our Meeting House is the fifth structure to occupy this site. In July and August we move up the hill to Brewster Chapel.
