Why I Joined First Parish Plymouth – Ron Clarke, age 61 Somewhere on some old reel to reel tape is a recording of my Dad putting me down to sleep when I was four. I was asking a lot of questions, one of which was, how did the world get here. Dad patiently explained…God made the world…I then asked, well, who made God ? Dad had no answer, and I haven’t stopped asking that question. I’m a UU… Only 10% of UU’s are born into the religion, and I’m one of them. I was raised in the Weymouth UU church, and Sunday school was an exposure to various world religions, world cultures, and a philosophy of thinking for yourself. I got away from being an active UU in my late teens, but upon getting married after college, started back at the Weymouth UU church. When it came time to buy a house and raise a family in 1986, we moved to Carver. After looking at other UU churches, we visited Plymouth. Why did we end up choosing Plymouth ? The history ? Partly. The Minister, Bob Miller ? Partly. The congregation ? Partly. Conley Pierce ? Primarily ! At our first coffee hour, with my wife, Sharon, son Jason and daughter Jessi, Conley came over to talk to us, greeting us with such a warm welcome that we decided on the spot that this would be home. A place to seek the answers to all our questions, which I am still seeking within a wonderful community of people, 31 years later!
